How long does grout take to dry?

Tile grouting is the final step in tiling projects. It fills the narrow gaps between tiles and gives them a nice finish. It also keeps dirt from getting between the tiles and makes it hard to clean up the area.

Whether you’re tiling walls or floors, there is a time frame you need to follow to ensure the grout will dry properly and not damage your floor or wall tiles. Our tile store contractors recommend waiting 24 hours after tiling before grouting so that all of the adhesive and mortar used to install your tiles is fully dry and will stick to the walls.

The thinnest mortar needs air to cure, so you shouldn’t disturb it while it’s still drying. If you do, you’ll seal the air needed for the mortar to cure and it will take longer for the thinnest parts of your tile to dry.

If you use a waterproofing layer underneath your tiles, allow 48–72 hours for curing, as the barrier slows the drying process. This time is important to keep your tiles moisture-safe and prevent cracks, which can lead to water damage in the future.

It is also important to let the grout cure before you walk on it because walking on grout that is wet will weaken it, making it more likely for the grout to crumble. This can make your tiles fall off and cause other problems in the future.

You should also check your grout periodically for signs of mold and mildew. If you see any of these in the grout lines, it is probably a good idea to regrout your tiles. This will restore their original appearance and functionality.
